AAJA MN OFFICERS President National Board Rep. Student Rep. |
|
February 2007 AAJA
meeting minutes Feb. 18, 2007 In attendance: Emma Carew, Tom Lee, Lewis Leung, Nancy Ngo, Nancy Yang Absent: Mary Tan Tardy: NEXT MEETING: Budget: § Lewis talked to a Wells Fargo bank representative and picked out a few index funds. Expense ratios are fairly small on all accounts (.18 percent, .19 percent, .34 percent) and the annual returns in one year are about 10-percent-plus. § Funds for consideration: Vanguard 500 (considered safe); Vanguard Total Stock Market Index (bigger than the 500, which is just the 500 best tracked); Vanguard Windsor II Fund; § Tom said we should play it safe as this is the first time we are doing this. § Lewis suggested the Total Stock Market fund. § Short-term CD interest rates that Lewis has looked at: 1-2 months at 2.28 percent; 3-5 months at 3.53 percent; 5 months at 4.69 percent § Lewis checked with online banking; they are mostly for individuals and not organizations. § Lewis suggested keeping about $8K-$10K in our checking each year and the rest split into mutual funds and CDs. The CD funds will be split into two accounts at one/two-month intervals, meaning we’ll always have earned interest and funds available every month. § Breakdown: $10K in checking, $8K in mutual funds, $10K in CDs. Votes: 5-0 in favor. § Mutual funds: Total Stock Market and Vanguard 500. Miami board meeting: § Nancy has a board meeting next month but will be taking a vacation afterwards. Multi-stop ticket is similarly priced to a roundtrip ticket to Miami. Since the chapter pays for national board rep travel, we would save money with a multi-stop ticket rather than roundtrip ticket. § Lewis: We can pay for two-thirds of the ticket, Nancy pays the one-third remaining. Karaoke/mixer update: § Mixer set for noon, March 4 at WCCO. § Potluck style, people are to bring food (Nancy N. said she’ll bring rice, Tom will bring plates and napkins and beverages, Emma will bring egg rolls and wontons, Nancy Y. will bring cookies and chips.) § RSVP request will go out this week. § Raffle will be available for members; small door prizes, etc. § Agenda: Board will introduce themselves, Mary can give an overview of what chapter has planned for the year, what we’ve done in the past year. PRISM: §
The student groups wants to get more professional
development, and would like to tap into a diverse pool of professionals. §
Emma is meeting with the president this week and will
have a better idea of what they would like us to do (student mentorhips, talk
at meetings, etc.). §
Tom said that is part of our mission – we did not do
a good enough job of that last year and this would be a great opportunity to
get more involved. §
Anytime we have student info we should pass the info
to Emma, who can get it on the J-school list-serv. Misc. § Put a link on our Web site that will link to national membership info. § Anders and Keith are leaving the Strib, Tom suggested we buy a small gift of appreciation for both. Gift for Anders: A cookbook. Emma will ask Marilyn Moyer about suggested gift for Keith. § Scholarship applications due March 31 for two $500 fall semester scholarships. § Nancy Y. to put our internship and grant applications online. NEXT MEETING AGENDA: 11 a.m. March 25, Tom Lee’s apartment §
