AAJA Chapter Elections
Shape Our Organization's Future

Eight seats are up for election this year. Candidates are to be named shortly.

President

Duties include:

* Setting and presiding over regular chapter board meetings and other events;
* Setting the direction of chapter programs and activities;
* Outreaching to news organizations, journalism groups and other to promote the AAJA mission;
* Preparing annual report and other updates to be filed with national office.

Vice President/Print

Duties include:

* Recommending and planning programming particularly of interest to print members;
* Leading board meetings and attending other functions in president's absence;
* Building coalitions and outreaching to print outlets to support AAJA programs.

Treasurer

Duties include:

* Presiding over finance matters of the chapter;
* Handling all reimbursements in a timely manner and keep good records of income and expenditures of the chapter;
* Preparing chapter's annual tax return by prescribed deadline;
* Setting the direction of fundraising and all chapter budget issues.

Three chapter board seats

Board member duties include:

* Heading up a committee and/or organizing activities for the chapter;
* Voting on finance, sponsorship and other issues facing the chapter.
* Contributing to the chapter newsletter and planning out other regular chapter activities.

Two National board representative Seats -- two-year term

* The national board representative must attend all national board meetings set by national office (usually about two a year). Board representatives are encouraged to have the financial support of their companies to pay for the cost of travel to board meetings (a limited fund is available for travel for board members who work for smaller news organizations that cannot support travel);
* The representative should serve as the liaison between the New York chapter and the national office and must keep the chapter members updates on changes and emphasis of national policies;
* The representative must be involved with fund-raising and other activities set up by the national board.

NOTE: Due to the staggered terms of office, elections will not be held this year for the positions of: vice president for broadcast, secretary and three local board seats.

Qualifications: All candidates must current, dues-paying, Full or Gold Full members of the New York chapter (one exception: the treasurer can be an associate member of the chapter). Officers must pay their 2005 dues before assuming office. While associate, student and retired members are not eligible for board positions, they are eligible -- and encouraged -- to lead or join chapter committees.
