Sreenath Sreenivasan

Sreenath SreenivasanSreenath "Sree" Sreenivasan considers himself to be truly pan-Asian. He was born in Tokyo to Indian parents and has lived in Bhutan, Burma, India and Fiji.

He is a professor of journalism at Columbia University, where he runs the Graduate School of Journalism's new media program. He has taught broadcast, new media and print journalism for 10 years there. He also teaches workshops in "Smarter Surfing: Better Use of Your Web Time" in newsrooms and educational institutions around the US and abroad. More than 7,000 people in seven countries have attended his workshops.

In the New York City area, Sree can be seen regularly on WABC/7 every Thursday at 6:45 a.m. for the station's "Tech Guru" segments, discussing technology trends and gadgets and every Saturday morning at 7:45 for "Sree's Top Three." He occasionally guest-hosts segments of "Asian America" on PBS, a nationally syndicated English program about Asian American affairs (on which he regularly interviews AAJA members).

From 2000 to 2003, he was the founding administrator of the Online Journalism Awards, the world's largest new media contest, run by Columbia and the Online News Association (a group he helped co-found in 1998).

As a freelance writer he has been published in The New York Times, Newsday, BusinessWeek and Rolling Stone, among others.

He is a long-time member of AAJA's New York Chapter. He is also co-founder and former president of SAJA, the South Asian Journalists Association.

Sree has a master's in journalism from Columbia and a bachelor's in history from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He also studied in the NYC public school system, graduating from P.S. 6.

He lives in Manhattan (where he first arrived when he was nine) with his wife, Roopa Unnikrishnan, a management consultant, Rhodes Scholar and world-class sports rifle shooter.
