Chapter Meeting
February 4, 2006

Reaching out to non-Asian journalists:

  • Outreach to NABJ, NAJA and other people in newsrooms
  • Mid-career grants to any nationality
  • The need for more voices in newsrooms -
    don't have to be a minority to understand importance of diversity

Mid-career outreach:

  • Seattle launching a "Legacy /Heritage Grant"
  • Offering $1,500 - $2,000 for person to travel to family's country of origin -
    builds appreciation for that culture and brings knowledge to the newsroom
  • Trivia Bowl in the fall or early winter
  • Photo action in November
  • Photojournalists to donate photos
  • Brainstorm alternatives or additions to the banquet - break out of the box ideas -
    generate more involvement and interest in Portland AAJA

    Helen to donate miles to bring Tina up from Bay Area to Portland
    Tracey to look into PR contacts at hotels to house Tina - two nights

  • Locations:
  • Wong's King Seafood Restaurant on 87th and Division
    Parking may be an issue
    Need to check sound system - how reliable is it - run a tech check BEFORE banquet
    Incorporate some dim sum tasting
    No Ho's - Hawaiian food
    Keep with this years banquet theme
    Need to rent a location space
  • Auction Items:
  • Ask members to bring in auction items ASAP
    Amy to collect at her home - Michelle to assist in organizing and pricing

Convention Workshop - Portland Chapter Responsible:

  • Approx. 90 minutes media access workshop
  • PR 101 for community members
  • Amy has handbook on how to conduct a media access workshop
  • Involves hands-on exercises and teaching community members how to be interviewed -
    from both print and broadcast angle
  • Committee includes: Angie, Kyle and Maya

Convention Stipend:

  • Levels of stipend contingent on volunteer involvement at convention and with local chapter
  • Amount: $100 - $200

Chapter Finances:

  • Chapter has approximately $16,000
  • Roll over into a six month CD
  • Intend to donate 10% of current assets to National (approx $1,500)
