AAJA Sacramento extends local scholarship deadline to May 1

AAJA Sacramento is pleased to extend its local chapter scholarship deadline to May 1. Each year, AAJA offers scholarships to outstanding high school seniors and undergraduate and graduate students. Students are selected based on the following criteria:

• Commitment to the field of journalism.
• Sensitivity to Asian American and Pacific Islander issues as demonstrated by community involvement.
• Journalistic ability
• Financial need

KUDOS

Ryan Yamamoto, Sports Anchor/Reporter at News10, has been nominated for an Emmy for his story - "Beating the Odds, Beating Brain Surgery."

AAJA Members Florence Low and Ngoc Nguyen of the Sacramento Bee have been selected for the AAJA Multimedia Training Opportunities to be held in San Francisco this year. The hands-on training sessions include classes on multimedia equipment, digital and high-definition cameras, Mac digital editing, video production, Final Cut Pro and Dreamweaver.

Bobby Caina Calvan, Judy Lin, and Pamela Wu are the newest graduates of AAJA's Executive Leadership Program. ELP helps Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists become outstanding newsroom leaders and executives.The 2008 ELP Introductory Session took place on March 12-16 in San Francisco. Other AAJA Sacramento Chapter graduates include: Suzanne Phan (Class of 2006) and Sandy Louey (Class of 1998).

Bobby's Back From Baghdad

Bobby Caina Calvan, a Sacramento Bee staff writer and AAJA Sacramento's representative to the AAJA National Advisory Board, has returned from a three-month leave from The Bee. Six of those weeks were spent in the Baghdad bureau of McClatchy Newspapers, The Bee's parent company.

AAJA Sacramento Welcomes Judy Lin, New Co-Chapter President'
After three years as AAJA Sacramento chapter president, Sandy Louey is switching gears. She'll now serve as chapter secretary. Judy Lin and Suzanne Phan will serve as chapter co-presidents for 2008.

AAJA Sacramento thanks Sandy for all her work. Under her leadership, we were recognized as 'Chapter of the Year' by national AAJA in 2006. The chapter also organized three successful fundraisers-- A 25th Anniversary Event, 'Taste of Asia' Chef Showcase, and AAJA Photo Showcase/Silent Auction.



AAJA SACRAMENTO AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS

AAJA Sacramento congratulates two outstanding students who will undoubtedly make us proud in the years to come. Funding for the scholarships was provided by the Asian Pacific Rim Foundation and The Sacramento Bee.

Vannessa Maravilla, a graduate of the University of California, Davis, will receive $2,000
from AAJA Sacramento to help pay for her graduate studies at Syracuse Univeresity’s Newhouse School of Public Communications. She is in the magazine, newspaper and on-line journalism master's program, with an emphasis in newspapers and international journalism.

Whitney Clark, an incoming student at California State University, Sacramento, was awarded a $750 scholarship. She plans to major in communications studies with a concentration in public relations. Whitney hopes to go into journalism, politics or both.




COMINGS AND GOINGS

Kris Vera-Phillips produces the weekend morning edition of KCRA 3 Reports. Previously, she produced the news at KTKA in Topeka, Kansas. Kris graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in American Studies and earned her master's degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Kris has been a member of AAJA since 2005.

Kevin German, a former photographer for The Sacramento Bee, is moving to Vietnam to work on social documentaries in southeast Asia. He served as the photo coordinator for AAJA Sacramento's Photo Showcase and Silent Auction last October. His work can be found at his website, kevingerman.com.

Michelle Liu joins FOX40 as a reporter. She is glad to be back home in California after working and reporting in Texas and most recently in Illinois. Michelle graduated from UCLA and is orginally from Los Angeles.

Jamie Soriano joins FOX 40 as an assignment reporter. She last worked at KION/KCBA (CBS & FOX) in Salinas as a producer, and the weekend anchor and reporter. She was born and raised in Salinas, California and graduated from San Diego State University with a journalism degree.

Tim and Karisse Sakahara have left Sacramento for Honolulu. Tim, previously a reporter with Fox40, joins KGMB in Honolulu. Karisse, morning executive producer at News10, returns to Hawaii with a new baby girl.

Rachelle Antonio joins KCRA3/my58 as a morning news producer. She previously produced the news at KSBW in the Salinas-Monterey-Santa Cruz market. She is
originally from Daly City and graduated from California State University, San Diego.

Georgette Copes has left Fox 40, where she worked as a reporter, to return to San Diego to be with family.

Bora Kim has left CBS13/CW31 after two years as a reporter and Stockton bureau chief.

Toan Lam, who previously worked as a FOX40 writer, has signed on with San Francisco’s KRON as a video journalist.

Grace Lee has left KCRA3 to return to KGMB in Honolulu, where she serves as an anchor/reporter.

Patti Lee, formerly an anchor/reporter at CBS13 and a past president of AAJA Sacramento, has returned to broadcasting as a freelancer for KTVU news in the Bay Area.

Thea Tio, a member of the Michigan chapter, has joined News10 as a reporter trainee, part of Gannett's first Talent Development Program.
