AAJA SACRAMENTO CHAPTER BOARD MEETING - MINUTES FOR NOV. 4 MEETING AT MIKUNI'S
I. Call to order/establishment of quorum at 7 p.m.
Board members in attendance: Judy Lin (in attendance for start of meeting), Sandy Louey, Lonnie Wong, Susie Wong, Ryan Yamamoto, and Suzanne Phan
II. Financial update - There are still sponsorship checks outstanding, but it appears that the Photo Showcase fundraiser raised more than $8,500 for the chapter
- Louey is also preparing to finish up a grant application to The Sacramento Bee's charitable donations program
III. Request from Suzanne Phan for a $500 professional stipend
-The board approved the $500 stipend for Phan with the amendment that her final project with the Catalyst leadership program be connected to journalism if at all possible. With the SACC program being new and not directly tied to journalism or journalism skills, there was some concern on the chapter board that we didn't want to set a precedent that the professional
stipends be used for non-journalism related programs.
-Motion made by Lin to approve the $500 for Phan, seconded by Louey
-Vote was 4-0 to approve it (Louey, Yamamoto, Susie Wong, Lonnie Wong in favor with Phan abstaining and Lin absent)
IV. Request for the chapter to pay for $1,000 in airfare and hotel for Judy Lin and Bobby Calvan to attend Camp AAJA in St. Petersburg, Fla in February 2008
-Motion made by Louey, second by Phan to approve $350 for Lin's hotel room and $650 for Calvan's hotel and airfare.
-Vote was 5-0 (Louey, Yamamoto, Phan, Susie Wong, Lonnie Wong)
V. Holiday mixer
The chapter is are looking at holding a holiday mixer in early December with the purpose of inviting current or potential AAJA Sacramento members - basically, this is a recruitment event to remind people that they are eligible for stipends and discounts to Unity, etc. Potential dates and locations we are considering are 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 or 10, with potential locations under
consideration is Taro's, Pulare, Ella's, and Zokku. The chapter will buy appetizers, but attendees will be responsible for their own drinks. The budget for the mixer is $120 to $150 for the food.
We hope to get about 20 to 30 people.
VI. Request from Stefanie Cruz to put out info on listserve about her children's book
-The board provided direction regarding a request from Stefanie Cruz, who wrote a children's book on Delta and Dawn, and wanted to be put that info including a link to her Website out
on the AAJA Sac listserve. The consensus was that access to and putting out info on the listserve should be another benefit of being a paid AAJA Sacramento chapter member - the same as access to convention and professional stipends, etc. She hasn't been a member before, but has indicated to Suzanne she was planning to register for 2008. When we get confirmation from national AAJA that she's joined, we will put out a graph about her book on our next listserve mailing.
VII. Discuss chapter board retreat to plan 2008 activities
-There was some discussion of having a chapter board retreat to plan out activities and budget for 2008 - sometime in January. Initial discussions about student workshop in March. No
discussion of when to hold retreat in January, but Yamamoto and Phan will be out of the country for 2 weeks and we will also be dealing with different work schedules of some board members who work weekends.
VIII. Chapter help pay for volunteer appreciation dinner at Mikuni's
-A motion was made to approve $135 to help pay for the volunteer appreciation dinner at Mikuni's
-Motion by Lonnie Wong, second by Phan
-Vote was 5-0 (Lonnie Wong, Susie Wong, Phan, Louey, Yamamoto)
IX. Adjournment at 9:30 p.m.
