Transportation: You'll need a taxi or a rental car.
Distance: It's about a seven-mile drive northwest of downtown Seattle. Take Elliott Avenue to 15th NW, go past Fisherman's terminal across the ship canal to Ballard. Left on NW Market and you'll see signs for the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks on your left.
Cost: Admission is free.

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, also known as the Ballard locks, link the saltwater of Puget Sound with the fresh waters of Lake Union and Lake Washington. While you're there, don't miss the beautiful botanical garden and be sure to find the fish ladders where you can view salmon from an underwater viewing room.
