Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference Scholarship
UNT-Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference of the Southwest will be making available 10 full scholarships (includes registration fee/meals and two nights at the Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center in Grapevine, Texas (1800 Highway 26 East -- five minutes from Dallas/Fort Worth Airport) for high school and college students to attend the conference in July. Scholarship application deadline: June 13 (Friday); conference: July 18-20 (Friday-Sunday). Diversity Fellowship, 2008
The American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors' membership is committed to developing newsroom staffs representative of the multicultural communities it serves today. Toward this goal, AASFE will award Diversity Fellowships to talented journalists of color to attend its 62nd annual conference in Houston, Texas, Oct. 15-18, 2008. Fellowships are awarded to writers, editors, copy editors, page designers and multimedia journalists in the United States and Canada who produce arts and features content both in print and online, or those interested in pursuing careers in arts and features. Fellows get the chance to meet and network with outstanding journalists who specialize in lifestyles coverage. They also participate in multimedia storytelling opportunities during the conference. And, in order to pass along what they learn at the AASFE conference, fellows will be asked to conduct a brown-bag seminar when they return to their news organizations. AASFE will cover fellows' registration, airfare, hotel and most meals.
To apply for a 2008 Diversity Fellowship, applicants must submit THREE copies each of:
* A letter explaining your interest in the fellowship and your perspective about the future of arts/features coverage
* A resume
* A professional letter of recommendation
* Writers must submit five stories demonstrating a versatile writing style
* Editors must submit five samples of sections or pages with comments on how stories were generated and/or edited
* Copy editors must submit five samples of work (three headlines with stories attached; and two stories with editing comments)
* Page designers must submit five samples of work
* For those journalists with online-only work, please list Web links in your application letter
* Applicants also must submit one publishable photo. Photos will not be returned.
Fellowship applications must be postmarked by June 20, 2008. Selections will be announced in July 2008.

Student Scholarship
The deadline to apply for this year's AAJA Texas student scholarship - worth up to $1,000 - is May 31, 2008. Residents of Texas or students attending college in the state are eligible to apply. Click here for details.
Professional Stipend
The Texas AAJA chapter offers a $1,000 professional stipend for working journalists to be applied to costs related to professional development -- skills and leadership training, workshops, seminars, etc. The deadline to apply has passed. Mentoring Program
Want to help young journalists find their way the fast-changing news business? AAJA is looking for mid-careers journalists to mentor students and young professionals. Mentors would agree to be in contact with their student throughout the year, by phone and email, working to meet in person at least once. Mentors would also be available to do critiques of resumes, portfolios and work samples, talk about job strategies, and generally be a sounding board for navigating the news business. Mentoring is open to print and broadcast students and journalists with fewer than 3 years of experience. Mentoring for students interested in a communications or public relations field is also available. Mentoring terms would last for a minimum of one year, with extensions available by request. State Conference 2008
CHECK OUT THE SPECIAL SECTION FOR MORE DETAILS! The Texas state conference on Saturday, April 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the University of Houston Communications building focused on skills and industry changes. Houston-based freelance writer Cynthia Greenwood was on the list of the guest speakers offering skills-building workshops. Greenwood, author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Shakespeare's Plays," and a contributor to The New York Times and The Houston Chronicle, will be offering tips on making the transition to a freelance-writing career. She is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, a non-fiction writers' association. The theme for the state conference was "Navigating Change." Conference organizers worked with Investigative Reporters and Editors and Lone Star EMMY, as well as the ASJA, to offer workshops that will help journalists navigate the changing media landscape. Planned workshops included: The New Media Journalist's Backpack, Content that Works, Immigration on Every Beat, and Getting into Freelancing. During the conference, the chapter also held a media access workshop for the Asian-American community in Houston.
