Copy Editors POLITICO seeks talented, detail-oriented and experienced copy editors to join its stellar copy desk full time. One position will be a Saturday-to-Wednesday shift. Qualifications: The ideal candidate must have at least 10 years' experience editing for a newspaper, magazine, wire service or news website and must demonstrate a strong command of grammar, familiarity with AP style and an ability to work swiftly and efficiently under tight deadlines. The candidate should also possess superior headline-writing abilities. A strong knowledge of and interest in government and politics is preferred. STAFF WRITER, NUCLEAR ENERGY INSTITUTE (www.nei.org) OVERVIEW: As the need for alternative energy sources increases, the Nuclear Energy Institute (www.nei.org) is at the forefront of communicating the benefits of building clean-air nuclear power plants and promoting the safety of existing plants to Capitol Hill staff, policy makers, media outlets and NEI members. As one of six writers in a 20+ staff communication services department, you will have the opportunity to contribute your writing skills in a variety of forms including newsletter articles, fact sheets, policy briefs, web updates, reports, issue briefs, presentations, brochures and other collateral material. Bring several years experience in journalism from a newspaper, public relations or magazine setting. While a background in nuclear energy or scientific writing is not required, the ability to grasp complex issues is. SALARY: $65K Send resume to: Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program![]() The Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program, now in its 11th year, is one of the few in Washington that not only pays a stipend for food, transportation and other essentials, but also provides free housing in furnished apartments near the National Zoo in Northwest Washington. The program brings journalism students to D.C. for reporting internships of four, 10 or 14 weeks.
Program participants will tour Washington journalism and government institutions and hear guest speakers. Interns report for the Web-based Scripps Howard wire and can report for campus or hometown newspapers or other news organizations. The interns work with an experienced Washington editor to choose, report and edit stories. Interns must be undergraduates - juniors or seniors - in the semester they are in Washington. Students who have just graduated from Hampton University or Florida International University may apply for the short course. Students with superior multimedia skills will be given preference over those without those skills. For more details, visit http://www.shfwire.com. Click on "how to apply," and download the application form. As newsrooms shrink, one of the first things that get cut is money for professional development. The D.C. chapter is providing stipends to offset costs to attend such programs. Applications are due on a rolling basis. Eligible applicants must submit completed form with payment to their chapters for approval and chapters have five business days to send forms to the AAJA National Office. Regarding eligibility, the AAJA by-laws allows dues reduction for full members only who were recently unemployed. The assistance does not apply retroactively.
