PART-TIME SPORTS COPY EDITOR The Record (Bergen County, NJ) has an opening for a part-time sports copy editor. Applicants should have at least five years of daily newspaper experience, including at least two years as a sports copy editor. The successful applicant should be able to work quickly under deadline pressure, juggle multiple tasks, write clear, engaging headlines, have a strong command of Associated Press style and edit and repair copy flawlessly. Reporting experience is preferred, and Quark experience is helpful. POYNTER FELLOWSHIPS AAJA in partnership with The Poynter Institute is offering the second of two fellowships for 2008. AAJA members can choose from a wide selection of nine courses from multimedia, to TV producing, leadership for the print newsroom to advanced copy editing, which will be held this year at The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, FL. These persons will be amenable to flexible scheduling in case they should be assigned to night or weekend hours and at times be able to work on-call. They will attend required staff meetings as announced and be willing to set individual goals to continually improve journalistic skills. In addition they will master the new technologies necessary to become visual content providers for the electronic editions of the two newspapers including audio slide shows. Due to the diversity of our coverage area the ideal candidate would be bilingual and willing to travel. They will demonstrate ability to work under intense deadline pressure and be amenable to new ideas and workflows. Photo Assignment Editor This person will be an informed newsman, understanding modern news cycles for print and web, and be aggressive in his approach to photo reporting. They will be a skilled and creative picture editor for staff and wire and successful in communicating his/her ideas to the news and copy desks and to the managing editors if needed. He/she will report to the Assistant Director and The Director of Photography as necessary He/she will be capable of taking charge of the photo desk in the newsroom at either newspaper. He/she will attend editorial news meetings, liaison with the news desk and as necessary report to our newsrooms in Hackensack or West Paterson . They will make daily assignments for photographers. He/she will work directly with photographers, generally solve problems, and guide our photographers to more productive results through transmitting information or suggesting approaches as necessary. They will assist our MOJO’s (mobile journalists) in their continued daily progress in a manner that will help make this program successful. These persons will be amenable to flexible scheduling in case they should be assigned to night or weekend hours and at times be able to work on-call. Night Photo Editor This person will understand modern news cycles for print and web, and be an expert in pre press operation for digital imaging. They will serve as night picture editor and be communicative with the copy desk for both daily newspapers. They will demonstrate know how and if necessary tone images on deadline for two newspapers, websites and My Capture. These persons will experts in pre press color correction. They will understand color space and the necessary specifications needed for different types of reproduction. They will be amenable to flexible scheduling and may be assigned to night and weekend hours. At times they will be able to work on-call. They will attend required staff meetings as announced and be willing to set individual goals to continually improve their technical skills including but not limited to photo shop, and photo mechanic. The preferred candidate will have familiarity with AGT and be proficient in moving files into the AGT system from ftp or email servers. They will be dependable and amenable to new ideas and workflows as our pre press technology is upgraded. They will be a skilled manager capable of issues involved in scheduling shifts, vacations for five Digital Specialists that perform all the imaging for two daily newspapers. He/she will report to the Assistant Director and The Director of Photography as necessary and they will be capable of taking charge of the photo desk in the newsroom should a story break in the evening hours. He/she will attend afternoon editorial news meetings, and liaison with the news desk. If necessary they will make late daily assignments for photographers. He/she will generally solve problems and they will demonstrate ability to work under intense deadline pressure. The preferred candidate will have expertise with AGT. They will have demonstrative picture editing skills particularly in sports. They will be a team player willing to work hard to get our daily newspapers to press.
