MINUTES OF JULY 16, 2005 BOARD MEETING (CONTINUED)

    IV. FINANCIAL MATTERS:

    A. BANK ACCOUNT: Wai Ping and Tan noted reasons to add the president as a signatory to the chapter's account: Wai Ping is an associate member, AAJA national would like more than one signatory on chapter bank accounts, and it was noted that common practice is to have the treasurer and president on a group's account.

VOTED: Tan moved, Wanita seconded the approval. Passed unanimously.

ACTION: HyunJu to send out board minutes, so Wai Ping and Tan can add Tan to the account.

    B. TREASURER'S REPORT: Wai Ping reported on the status of the chapter's accounts, which reflected actions the board had approved. (For online security, specifics will be omitted; details can be requested from Wai Ping.) Wai Ping noted that national has not yet sent dues the chapter was to receive for this year and the last quarter of 2004.

    C. TREASURER'S ATTENDANCE AT NATIONAL CONVENTION: It was noted previously that Wai Ping agreed to serve as the chapter's treasurer, that he helps many associations by serving on their boards, and that he is not a journalist by profession. Wai Ping described that the treasurers' meeting at the national convention is mandatory and that he will learn more about policies coming from national, such as standardizing treasurers' reports and other matters. His stay will be two days, and he will not need convention registration. Wai Ping noted that he'll ask about membership dues owed to the chapter.

VOTED: Tan moved that the board approve airfare, hotel, and food costs within reason (Wanita noted $40/day should be reasonable). Lister seconded. Approved unanimously.

ACTION: Wai Ping to search for reasonable airfare and present the total reimbursement amount later.

    V. COMPLETED EVENTS:

    A. AAJA-D.C. INTERN EVENT: Wanita reported on great turnout and high interest at the Intern Development Session with John Yang. Though the attendance had been capped at 15 interns, 18 arrived and 23 had responded for the event. Accomplished broadcast and print journalist John Yang spoke for two hours about his experiences as an ABC correspondent and previously as a reporter and editor at The Washington Post. The event was held at the 4th Estate restaurant at the National Press Club, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., June 22. The attendees requested another intern event before the end of summer, with greater publicity in advance. And the D.C. chapter gained possibly two new members.

ACTION: Wanita to arrange a second intern event this summer, with hopes of requesting CBS News Washington Correspondent Joie Chen as the speaker.

    B. AAJA-DC POTLUCK: Attendees shared dishes and engaged in a wide-ranging discussion from politics and contemporary culture to different ethnic customs and individuals' life stories until 3 p.m., July 16. Attendees were also treated to spontaneous singing and piano-playing by Katie Xiao. The board thanks Peggy Hu and her family for opening their home to the chapter and its guests.

    VI. BOARD CALENDAR:

Aug. meeting: No board meeting. See you in Minneapolis!

Next meeting: Sept. 17 at Tan Ly's unless another location is announced.
