    MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 19, 2005 BOARD MEETING

    COMPLETED BUSINESS:

    INTERNSHIP CRASH COURSE: Ylan organized a session where three professionals critiqued and spent one-on-one time with three students.
    Upcoming: Clips/resume/interviewing session for graduating journalism students.
    ACTION: Tan looking for a date in March.

    SAKI MIXER: Wanita reported a turnout of 20 to 24 people at a time. 1 new person signed up for membership. Saki was praised as a venue with a private room, dedicated bartender.
    Upcoming: Desire to have a couple of mixers at a regular place/day of the month throughout the year.

    TREASURER'S REPORT: Wai Ping sent a report on proceeds from the photo auction. Estimate so far: net income of $6,000.


    NEW BUSINESS:

    MEDIA ACCESS WORKSHOP: Ideas were discussed on how to help community groups practice media interaction.
    ACTION: Wanita to talk to National Press Club about venue for date in spring.

    BOARD POSITIONS: Farhana Hossain appointed as social chair. Seeking Secretary.

    EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM STIPEND: ELP application deadline: 1/20. The DC Chapter will offer a stipend of at least $500 toward part of the program fee, with additional funds for airfare and hotel in coordination with funding from the applicant's sponsoring company.

    AAJA-DC is a cosponsor of APABA's event 12/8 on Bruce Yamashita: "A Most Unlikely Hero."

    ECAASU media panel: Wanita organizing with ECAASU

    AAJA EAST COAST MINI-CONFERENCE: Sherri to set up 2 panels for conference in April on new media, managing change.

    MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: Outreach to encourage lapsed members to renew membership: Suggestion to test efficacy of sending out postcards to half of membership. DETAILS: Online renewal: https://www.aaja.org/membership/register/ ACTION: Tan to update Lister on postcards

    HAWAII CONVENTION: Seeking two members to coordinate DC chapter's duties:

  • Coordinate the chapter's silent auction contributions (Ideas were mentioned for DC tourism packages, the Spy Museum, others with national appeal. Let us know if you have contacts or ideas for items.)
  • Handle the chapter assignment of volunteers.
    ACTION: Tan to seek members interested in being more involved with national convention. Email: obitandc@yahoo.com if you'd like to help.

    CAMP AAJA: Chapter Leadership Development. DC Chapter to send 3 members, Jan. 19-22 at The Poynter Institute.


    IDEAS for upcoming year:

    From surveys: members want more opportunities to get to know each other, in addition to training and service programs.
    Possibilities: speed networking as an ice-breaker, social events like a crab feast in Baltimore.
