AAJA-D.C. Board Meeting Minutes

Old Business
1) May 2 Panel event
people have signed up so far/limit is 20
board members encouraged to find PIOs willing to discuss ways to write persuasively (i.e. for press releases). *helpful for people making a career switch.
looking for volunteers to help with refreshments and/or record the event (video/audio)
will send out event info. to AAJA chapters in NC, NY and Philly
2) June 13 Scrabble Tournament @ Baltimore Sun
Board members will ask around about lunch donations and prizes from area businesses
Registration is $20/person
deadline is June 5th
Need people to bring extra scrabble board games
Still need more advertising for the event
last year we raised $800
Ask Literacy Volunteers to send out information about the event
3) Trivia Bowl
Location: Community room @ Washington Post on a Friday (still need to confirm a date)
Tan is still organizing this event
will begin working on getting sponsors
maybe check into the possibility of serving alcohol? Request DC permit?
Wanita has info. on groups that participated last year.
Look for sponsorship opportunities; check out old meeting minutes for ideas
event will be a “team-building exercise”
Costs: $250/team= $25/each (10 per team) or $35/individual
Top prize: Vegas trip? (Sherri will look at old notes on last year’s prizes)
Revenue stream: sponsorship, raffle, ticket sales
4) Convention Stipends
stipends will be given out after the convention
stipends will be awarded based on volunteer work at the event and financial need
5) Internship Stipends
will go to students with financial need or unpaid internships
students will need to hold internships locally
Hanah will send stipend info. to J-school dean at UMCP
Last year AAJA-DC gave out 2 SCHOLARSHIPS; $2000 and $1000
This year we will give “up to $2000” in stipends
New Business
Media Access Workshop: “reaching out to non-profits about how to sell your stories”
last year it was held at Bloomberg, sometime in the fall?
we invited community non-profits; 20-25 people attended; 10-12 groups represented
this year we will include the element of blogging/social media
still need to choose a date; event is expected to last 2 hrs.
Summer Picnic
will most likely be held late July, right before the convention (Aug 12-15)
potential locations: Bluemont Park/Wheaton Regional/ Cabin John
Power of One
All AAJA National Board members encouraged to raise $2500 or more for the organization
Sherri has the envelopes for donations
